Course Description / Subject Matter:
This comprehensive CEU training course is designed to satisfy portions of the Florida Administrative Code 59A-18.0081 requirements for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Home Health Aides (HHAs), consolidating essential task-based skills into one integrated learning module. Developed and taught by a registered nurse, the course provides in-depth instruction on patient care activities that must be taught and documented by an RN. These include:

  • Assisting with oxygen therapy

  • Taking vital signs

  • Preparing special diets

  • Measuring intake and output

  • Performing glucometer readings

Course Content:
This self-paced text-based course is designed to satisfy the general training portion of the following statute:
59A-18.0081 Certified Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide.
The certified nursing assistant (CNA) and the home health aide shall:
(5) Perform other activities as taught and documented by a registered nurse, concerning activities for a specific patient and restricted to the following:
(a) Assisting with the placement or removal of a colostomy bag, excluding the removal of the flange or manipulation of the stoma’s site;
(b) Assisting with the application and removal of anti-embolism stockings and hosiery prescribed for therapeutic treatment of the legs.
(c) Assisting with the use of devices for aid to daily living such as a wheelchair or walker;
(d) Assisting with prescribed range of motion exercises;
(e) Assisting with prescribed ice cap or collar;
(f) Administer simple urine tests for sugar, acetone or albumin;
(g) Assisting with the use of a glucometer to perform blood glucose testing;
(h) Measuring and preparing special diets;
(i) Measuring intake and output of fluids;
(j) Measuring vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration or blood pressure;
(k) Assisting with oxygen nasal cannulas and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, excluding the titration of the prescribed oxygen levels; and
(l) Assisting with the reinforcement of dressing.

Learner Objectives:

By the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the legal responsibilities, limitations, and permitted activities of HHAs and CNAs as outlined in FAC 59A-18.0081.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques for performing delegated tasks such as vital sign measurement, special diet preparation, intake/output tracking, glucometer use, and simple urine testing.
  • Apply infection control principles and safety precautions, including the correct use of PPE and hygiene protocols, during all delegated care tasks.
  • Document and report patient care activities and abnormal findings accurately and in accordance with professional and regulatory standards.
