Overview
Michigan CNAs have an important role in recognizing changes, observing care conditions, protecting client safety, and reporting concerns through appropriate workplace and regulatory channels. Michigan continuing education requirements identify abuse and neglect as required areas of continuing competence for nurse aides. Current Michigan guidance also recognizes combined abuse and neglect education as addressing both topic areas when the education appropriately covers each subject.
This course focuses on common forms and indicators of abuse and neglect, including physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse, as well as failures to provide necessary care, supervision, protection, or services. Learners examine how observations, client statements, environmental conditions, changes in behavior, and patterns of care may raise concerns that require prompt reporting and follow-up.
The course emphasizes the CNA’s role in recognizing concerns without independently investigating, diagnosing, or determining whether abuse or neglect has legally occurred. Practical application includes immediate safety responses, communication with supervisors and required reporting channels, objective documentation, preservation of relevant information, and continued observation for changes in the client’s condition.
