Overview
Cannabis is an increasingly common topic in conversations about health, comfort, and quality of life. Patients and clients may ask about CBD products, discuss medical marijuana use, or arrive with information from advertising, friends, or social media. Healthcare professionals and caregivers benefit from an accessible scientific foundation and a respectful approach to these conversations.
This course begins with the basics of nerve signaling and introduces the endocannabinoid system, including the body’s own signaling molecules and cannabinoid receptors. It explains how THC and CBD differ and why their effects, potential benefits, and precautions should be considered separately.
The course examines therapeutic applications involving selected seizure disorders, chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting, certain chronic pain conditions, and multiple sclerosis-related spasticity. Learners will distinguish evidence for specific prescription cannabinoid medications from evidence for other cannabis products. Popular questions about sleep, anxiety, and inflammation will be addressed with clear explanations of what research supports and what remains uncertain.
A positive, nonjudgmental approach will emphasize informed conversations and realistic expectations. Practical topics include product variability, routes of use, delayed effects of oral products, medication interactions, changes in alertness, and considerations for older adults. Scenarios will connect these topics with observation, documentation, communication, and referral to an appropriate licensed clinician.
The course will include six instructional sections:
Reading, scenario reflection, and the post-test will be designed for approximately 60 minutes of learner engagement.
