Overview
Cultural competency involves integrated attitudes, knowledge, and skills that support effective care for patients from diverse cultures, groups, and communities. This course examines how culture, language, health beliefs, family roles, disability, immigration experiences, sexual orientation, gender identity, and individual preferences may affect communication, care planning, informed decision-making, and the patient’s healthcare experience.

Learners will review methods for recognizing assumptions, avoiding stereotypes, asking respectful questions, and adapting communication without exceeding professional responsibilities. The course also addresses qualified language assistance, patient-centered communication, documentation of relevant preferences and barriers, and reporting concerns that may affect safe and effective care.

Under the current Illinois requirement, applicable healthcare professionals must complete the training before the first renewal requiring continuing education on or after January 1, 2025, and repeat it once every six years. The completed hour may be counted toward the profession’s minimum continuing education requirement.

Learner Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify the Illinois cultural competency training requirement and cultural or linguistic factors that may influence nursing care.
  • Describe respectful communication practices that support effective care for patients from diverse cultures, groups, and communities.
  • Apply culturally responsive nursing strategies to patient interactions, care planning, documentation, and reporting of barriers affecting care.
