Overview

This course focuses on preventing abuse, neglect, and mistreatment of residents and patients receiving care from Delaware CNAs. The content addresses physical, emotional, sexual, verbal, and financial mistreatment; neglect; involuntary seclusion; inappropriate restraint; retaliation; and other conduct that may threaten a person’s safety, dignity, rights, or well-being.

Learners will examine physical, behavioral, environmental, and care-related warning signs that may indicate actual or suspected mistreatment. The course emphasizes immediate protection, timely reporting through required channels, objective documentation, preservation of relevant information, and communication with supervisors and appropriate authorities. It also explains the CNA’s responsibility to report concerns without attempting to investigate, confront an alleged perpetrator, or make conclusions beyond the CNA’s role.

Practical prevention strategies include respectful care, resident-centered communication, adherence to care plans, safe staffing practices, recognition of caregiver stress, appropriate response to challenging behaviors, protection from retaliation, and prompt escalation of unresolved risks. The course is designed around Delaware’s required patient abuse prevention subject matter for CNA recertification.

Learner Objectives
