Overview
Emergency preparedness is an important part of safe health care practice in the District of Columbia. Health professionals may encounter emergencies in homes, facilities, clinics, transportation settings, and community environments. These emergencies may include severe weather, power outages, infectious disease concerns, evacuation needs, fire, client medical changes, workplace violence concerns, supply disruptions, or communication failures.
This course focuses on the practical role of nurses, CNAs, HHAs, and other direct care staff before, during, and after an emergency. Learners review how to follow employer policies, recognize hazards, protect clients and themselves, report concerns, maintain communication, support continuity of care, and document actions objectively. The course emphasizes preparedness, calm decision-making, scope-aware response, and coordination with supervisors, emergency services, care teams, and client representatives.
