Overview

HIV/AIDS remains an important public health topic for healthcare workers and covered care personnel in the District of Columbia. Personnel who provide care, assist with activities of daily living, coordinate services, or support clients in healthcare and caregiving environments should understand basic HIV/AIDS concepts, including how HIV is transmitted, how it is not transmitted, and how routine care can be provided safely and respectfully.

This course emphasizes practical, role-appropriate education. Participants review prevention concepts, standard precautions, confidentiality expectations, stigma reduction, occupational exposure awareness, and communication strategies that support dignity and safety. The course is not intended to train participants to diagnose, treat, or independently counsel individuals regarding HIV/AIDS. Instead, it helps participants recognize when to follow policy, use standard precautions, protect privacy, document objectively, and refer questions or concerns to the appropriate licensed professional, supervisor, employer, or regulatory resource.

This course is designed to support HIV/AIDS-related education needs within DC healthcare and care-related settings. It may be appropriate when HIV/AIDS, communicable disease awareness, infection control, or public health priority education is required or accepted. Participants are responsible for verifying that this course meets the requirements of their applicable licensing, certification, employer, or regulatory authority.
