Overview
Pain and symptom management is an important component of nursing assessment, care planning, intervention, and evaluation across clinical settings. Michigan nursing renewal requirements include at least 2 hours of continuing education in pain and symptom management as part of the required continuing education for RN and LPN renewal. This course addresses that state-specific requirement while focusing on practical application to nursing care.
Learners will examine factors that influence pain and symptom experiences, structured assessment approaches, patient communication, nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic management considerations, reassessment, documentation, and reporting. The course also addresses barriers to effective symptom management, patient-centered decision-making, medication-related safety, and the nurse’s responsibility to recognize and communicate changes in condition. Content is designed to support RNs and LPNs in applying role-appropriate judgment, following organizational policies and applicable scope-of-practice requirements, and contributing to coordinated pain and symptom management.
