Overview
Nevada nurses are required to complete 4 Contact Hours of instruction relating to cultural competency, diversity, equity, and inclusion during each license renewal cycle. These Contact Hours are included within the total continuing education requirements applicable to the nurse’s license type.
This course examines how culture, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, veteran status, language, socioeconomic conditions, health literacy, and lived experience may influence health beliefs, communication, access to services, trust, treatment decisions, and patient outcomes. The course addresses populations identified within Nevada’s cultural competency requirements, including people from different gender, racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds; LGBTQ+ persons; children and older adults; veterans; persons with mental illness; and persons with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities.
Learners will consider the effects of explicit and implicit bias, stereotyping, discrimination, unequal access, communication barriers, and structural conditions within health care. Practical content emphasizes culturally responsive assessment, use of qualified language assistance, respectful communication, shared decision-making, individualized care planning, advocacy, documentation, reporting, and collaboration with the health care team.
The course supports role-appropriate nursing judgment. Cultural background should inform respectful inquiry and individualized care but should not be used to make assumptions about a patient. Nurses remain responsible for following applicable laws, professional standards, employer policies, documentation requirements, and scope-of-practice boundaries. Completion of this course should not be represented as meeting a Nevada licensing requirement unless the course and provider are accepted or approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing.
