Ohio Nurse Practice Act and Board Rules: Category A Requirement for RNs and LPNs

Overview
Ohio law establishes continuing education requirements for RNs and LPNs and requires that at least 1 Contact Hour during a standard renewal period be Category A education directly related to the statutes and rules governing nursing practice in Ohio. This course focuses on the legal and regulatory framework contained in Chapter 4723 of the Ohio Revised Code and applicable rules of the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Course content will examine how the Nurse Practice Act and Board rules affect the responsibilities of RNs and LPNs in daily practice. Topics include continuing education responsibilities, RN and LPN scope of practice, standards of safe practice, nursing delegation, accountability, documentation, communication, and recognition of situations that require consultation, reporting, or action within the nurse’s authorized role. Practical scenarios will help learners apply Ohio requirements to workplace decisions involving patient safety and professional nursing responsibilities.

Ohio Board rules establish specific requirements for an educational activity to qualify as Category A. Course completion should not be interpreted as approval or acceptance by the Ohio Board of Nursing unless applicable provider or approval requirements have been separately established.

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

• Identify the Ohio continuing education requirement for RN and LPN license renewal, including the requirement for at least 1 Contact Hour of Category A education directly related to the Ohio Nurse Practice Act and Board rules.
