Overview

Substance misuse and drug diversion can affect patients, clients, healthcare professionals, workplaces, and communities. Healthcare professionals may encounter individuals with substance use disorders, people at risk for overdose, coworkers who demonstrate possible impairment, and medication-handling situations that create opportunities for diversion. Safe practice requires an objective understanding of substance-related concerns and a clear awareness of professional responsibilities and role boundaries.

This course reviews substance use disorder terminology and disease processes, risk factors, and commonly misused substances, including opioids, sedatives, stimulants, alcohol, and other substances. It addresses recognition of possible substance misuse, screening and assessment principles, overdose recognition and prevention, treatment approaches, recovery support, stigma reduction, and person-centered communication.

The course also examines substance misuse among healthcare professionals and the safety concerns associated with possible impairment in the workplace. Learners will review observable warning signs, appropriate responses to suspected impairment, professional accountability, communication, documentation, reporting responsibilities, and the importance of following organizational policy, applicable law, and professional standards. Healthcare professionals should report objective observations and safety concerns rather than attempting to diagnose a coworker.

A substantial portion of the course focuses on drug diversion in healthcare settings. Topics include common diversion methods and warning signs, controlled-substance security, medication access, administration, storage, wasting, discrepancies, documentation, chain-of-custody considerations, and reporting concerns. Prevention strategies include appropriate access controls, accurate records, secure medication practices, monitoring systems, communication, and workplace processes that reduce opportunities for diversion.

Because healthcare roles differ, responsibilities related to screening, assessment, medication administration, controlled substances, reporting, and emergency response must remain within the learner’s authorized scope of practice and organizational role. The course emphasizes recognizing concerns, protecting patient or client safety, communicating observations, documenting appropriately, and following established reporting procedures.

For West Virginia LPNs, the course is intentionally designed to address the required subject area of substance abuse or drug diversion while remaining applicable to healthcare professionals in other jurisdictions. Learners remain responsible for confirming the continuing education requirements, scope-of-practice standards, employer policies, and reporting obligations that apply to their individual role and license.

Learner Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

• Identify substance use disorder terminology, risk factors, commonly misused substances, signs of possible misuse, overdose concerns, and principles of treatment and recovery support relevant to healthcare practice and the West Virginia LPN substance abuse or drug diversion education requirement.
• Differentiate objective signs of possible healthcare professional impairment and drug diversion from assumptions or unsupported conclusions, including warning signs involving medication access, controlled substances, documentation, wasting, discrepancies, and patient or client care.
• Apply role-appropriate responsibilities for medication security, documentation, communication, patient or client safety, professional accountability, and reporting when substance misuse, impairment, or drug diversion is suspected, including principles relevant to the West Virginia LPN substance abuse or drug diversion education requirement.
