This Texas-focused course provides licensed nurses with education in nursing jurisprudence and ethics required before the end of every third two-year Texas licensing period. Designed for LVNs, RNs, and APRNs, the course addresses the Texas Nursing Practice Act, Texas Board of Nursing rules, Board Rule §217.11, Texas BON Position Statements, principles of nursing ethics, and professional boundaries. Practical application emphasizes safe nursing practice, professional judgment, accountability, documentation, communication, and appropriate responses to legal and ethical concerns encountered in nursing practice.
Target Audience
Texas licensed vocational nurses, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses who are completing the Texas nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics continuing nursing education requirement.

Overview
Texas nurses are responsible for practicing in accordance with the Texas Nursing Practice Act, Texas Board of Nursing rules and regulations, applicable standards of nursing practice, and other laws and professional requirements affecting their roles. Texas requires nurses to complete at least 2 Contact Hours of continuing nursing education related to nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics before the end of every third two-year licensing period. These Contact Hours may be applied toward the general 20 Contact Hours of continuing nursing education required for license renewal.
This course examines the legal and professional framework that guides nursing practice in Texas. Content addresses the Texas Nursing Practice Act, the authority and rules of the Texas Board of Nursing, Board Rule §217.11 regarding Standards of Nursing Practice, relevant Texas BON Position Statements, principles of nursing ethics, and professional boundaries. Learners will consider how these requirements affect decisions involving patient safety, scope of practice, assignments, communication, documentation, accountability, professional relationships, and nursing judgment.
The course also uses practice scenarios to help nurses apply legal standards and ethical principles to realistic situations. Emphasis is placed on recognizing role responsibilities, identifying potential legal or ethical concerns, maintaining appropriate professional boundaries, documenting nursing actions accurately, communicating concerns through appropriate channels, and responding in a manner consistent with Texas nursing standards.
This course addresses the targeted continuing nursing education requirement for nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics. It is not the Texas Nursing Jurisprudence Exam and is not an exam-preparation course for applicants seeking initial Texas licensure or licensure by endorsement.
