Learner Objectives
Overview
Transfer boards, sometimes called sliding boards or transfer benches, are assistive devices used to help individuals move between seated surfaces with reduced lifting by the caregiver. These devices are commonly used in rehabilitation, home care, wheelchair transfers, and post-injury recovery settings.
Safe use of transfer boards requires proper preparation, positioning, communication, and environmental awareness. Although transfer boards may appear simple, improper use can result in falls, skin injuries, shoulder strain, or caregiver injury. Understanding the limitations of both the equipment and the individual receiving assistance is essential.
This course focuses on practical caregiving application, including home care considerations, recognizing unsafe transfer situations, and maintaining safe, objective, and dignity-focused caregiving practices.
