Overview
Professional nursing practice in West Virginia is guided by the West Virginia Nurse Practice Act, Board rules, and standards that support safe, accountable nursing care. The West Virginia RN Board states that law and rules must be used together when making practice-related decisions, and the RN Board law is located in Chapter 30, Article 7 of the West Virginia Code.
This course focuses on practical legal responsibilities that affect daily nursing practice, including maintaining an active license, practicing within role and competence, recognizing scope concerns, documenting objectively, communicating changes in client condition, and responding appropriately when unsafe or unclear situations arise. West Virginia standards for professional nursing practice include accepting responsibility for nursing judgments, actions, competence, decisions, and behavior.
The course is designed to help nurses connect legal and regulatory expectations to real-world care settings such as hospitals, clinics, home care, long-term care, and community-based services. It supports careful decision-making, client-centered communication, professional boundaries, timely reporting, and defensible documentation without providing legal advice.
