Georgia Continuing Education & Caregiver Training Requirements

Georgia RNs may complete 30 contact hours of continuing education during each two-year renewal period. The 30-hour CE pathway is one of five continuing competency options available for renewing a Georgia RN license.

Qualifying C-E-U.com nursing courses may be used toward the 30-hour option.

Georgia LPNs must complete 20 contact hours of continuing education during each two-year renewal period. As an alternative, an LPN may complete an accredited academic program of study in registered professional nursing.

Qualifying C-E-U.com nursing courses may be used toward the 20-hour continuing education requirement.

Georgia does not require specific CE topics for general RN or LPN license renewal. Nurses using the continuing education option may select professionally relevant nursing and healthcare courses from an accepted provider.

Courses must be at least 30 minutes long and sufficiently professional in character. Programs designed for the general public, workplace orientation, and training limited to new employer policies, procedures, or equipment are not accepted as nursing continuing education.

C-E-U.com offers a wide variety of nursing-focused courses that may be used toward Georgia’s 30-hour RN option or 20-hour LPN requirement.

Georgia nurses must submit documentation of completed continuing education through CE Broker. Courses reported directly by the provider should appear in the nurse’s CE Broker account. If a course is not automatically reported, the nurse must self-report it and upload the supporting certificate.

Nurses should review their CE Broker transcript before renewing and retain continuing competency documentation for at least four years.

Yes. Georgia nurses may complete all required continuing education hours online, provided the courses are offered by an accepted provider and otherwise meet the Georgia Board of Nursing’s standards.

Georgia CNAs do not follow the same continuing education requirements as registered nurses.

Georgia RNs may use 30 contact hours as one option for biennial license renewal. CNA registry renewal is generally based on completing at least eight hours of paid nursing-related work under nurse supervision during each 24-month period, rather than completing a set number of CE hours.

Separately, CNAs working in Medicare- or Medicaid-certified nursing facilities must receive at least 12 hours of in-service training each year. This training must include dementia management and resident abuse prevention. C-E-U.com courses may support the annual in-service requirement when accepted by the employer or facility, but continuing education alone does not renew Georgia CNA registry status.

If a Georgia nurse does not complete the required continuing competency or education requirements by the renewal deadline, the renewal application is considered incomplete and the license will not be renewed.

Georgia provides a one-month late-renewal period, but the nurse may not practice after the license expiration date until the license is renewed and active. The late period ends on the last day of February for RNs and April 30 for LPNs.

After the late-renewal period closes, the license becomes lapsed and the nurse must apply for reinstatement before returning to practice. Additional documentation, fees, and competency requirements may apply.

Personal Care Aides working for Georgia's licensed Private Home Care Providers must complete 8 hours of continuing training each year after their initial 40-hour program. C-E-U.com's caregiver courses may be used to meet this annual requirement when accepted by the employer.
