Maryland Nursing Continuing Education & Caregiver Training
Maryland (MD) Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses must demonstrate continued competency for license renewal. Nurses may qualify through 1,000 hours of active nursing practice during the preceding five years, recent completion of a Maryland Board-approved nursing education program, or 30 qualifying continuing-education units completed during the two years before renewal.
Maryland limits the 30-CEU renewal pathway to continuing education awarded or approved by organizations specifically recognized in state nursing regulations. C-E-U.com's general nursing courses are approved through the Florida Board of Nursing but are not currently represented as satisfying Maryland's 30-CEU renewal pathway.
Beginning with the first applicable renewal after April 1, 2026, Maryland healthcare professionals must also complete approved structural racism training and, when not previously completed, approved implicit bias training. No. The 30-CEU option is one of several continued-competency pathways. Nurses who meet the active nursing-practice or recent nursing-education pathway do not also need to complete 30 CEUs for routine renewal.
Not currently. Maryland requires continuing-education units used for the 30-CEU renewal pathway to be awarded or approved by one of the organizations specifically recognized in Maryland nursing regulations.

Nurses using the 30-CEU renewal pathway must retain evidence of completed continuing education for six years after the license is renewed.
If selected for an audit, the nurse must provide the requested CEU documentation to the Maryland Board of Nursing within 30 days.
Maryland Registered Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse licenses generally expire on the 28th day of the nurse's birth month during the applicable renewal year. The Board allows online renewal for a limited period after the expiration date, but nurses should renew before expiration to avoid an interruption in active licensure.
Maryland also warns that renewal applications received fewer than 30 days before expiration are not guaranteed to be processed before the license expires. Nurses should complete applicable continued-competency and state-specific training requirements as early as possible.
