Oregon RN and LPN Continuing Education
Beginning January 1, 2028, Oregon RNs and LPNs must complete 20 hours of continuing education during the previous two years as part of license renewal. Qualifying education must be relevant to nursing practice and appropriate to the nurse’s level of licensure.

Oregon RN/LPN Continuing Education — 20 Hours Beginning in 2028
Beginning January 1, 2028, Oregon RNs and LPNs must complete 20 hours of continuing education within the two years preceding renewal.
Current Oregon Nursing Requirements
Oregon currently requires RNs and LPNs to complete state-specific education in pain management and cultural competency. These requirements remain separate from the new 20-hour general continuing education requirement that begins January 1, 2028.
Pain Management Education
Oregon nurses must complete 1 hour of qualifying pain management education within the required renewal timeframe. This requirement follows Oregon-specific approval standards.

Oregon CNA Requirements
Oregon CNAs are certified by the Oregon State Board of Nursing and renew every two years. Renewal requires at least 400 hours of paid CNA employment during the two-year period, performed under nurse supervision (first-time renewals within two years of certification are exempt). Oregon consolidated its CNA 1 and CNA 2 credentials into a single unified CNA certificate on July 1, 2025.
Oregon CNAs must also complete 2 hours of cultural competency education within each 48-month period. Separately, CNAs employed in Medicare- or Medicaid-certified nursing facilities receive at least 12 hours of in-service education each year under federal rules (42 CFR §483.95(g)), tracked by the facility.

Oregon’s 2-hour cultural competency requirement follows state-specific approval standards. Oregon Home Health Aide (HHA) Requirements
Home health aides working for Medicare-certified home health agencies in Oregon must meet the federal training standard: at least 75 hours of training, including a minimum of 16 hours of clinical (practical) training, plus a competency evaluation (42 CFR §484.80). Oregon does not add a separate state CE-hour requirement on top of the federal standard for agency-employed home health aides.
After certification, federal rules require at least 12 hours of in-service training during each 12-month period, which may be furnished while the aide is providing care and must be supervised by a registered nurse.

Home health agencies remain responsible for supervising in-service training through a registered nurse, verifying aide competency, and maintaining documentation of completed training hours. Aides paid through Oregon’s Medicaid in-home programs as home care workers train separately through the Oregon Home Care Commission rather than under the federal home health aide standard.
