Florida (FL) Nursing Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

In addition to required Florida Board of Nursing topics, RNs and LPNs complete general continuing education contact hours to meet the 24-hour renewal requirement. These general hours allow nurses to choose elective courses relevant to their practice while still satisfying Florida license renewal requirements.

Florida nurses must complete 2 contact hours on the prevention of medical errors. This course covers root-cause analysis, system-based thinking, and strategies to reduce errors in clinical practice.

This 2-hour course covers the Florida Nurse Practice Act and the administrative rules governing RN and LPN practice. It is required every renewal period by the Florida Board of Nursing.

Florida law requires all licensed nurses to complete continuing education on recognizing the signs of human trafficking and understanding the healthcare professional's reporting obligations.

Florida Statute 456.013 requires a one-time, 1-hour HIV/AIDS continuing education course prior to initial license renewal. Once completed it does not need to be repeated.

Florida RNs and LPNs must complete a 2-hour Domestic Violence continuing education course every third renewal cycle, in addition to the standard 24 CE contact hours required for license renewal.

Florida RNs and LPNs must complete a 2-hour Recognition of Impairment in the Workplace course every other renewal period.

Florida Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) must complete a minimum of 24 hours of board-approved in-service training each biennium for certification renewal. CNA in-service training includes required topic areas such as infection control, domestic violence, documentation and legal aspects, resident rights, communication with cognitively impaired clients, CPR skills, and medical error prevention and safety. These requirements are separate from RN/LPN continuing education requirements but are also overseen by the Florida Board of Nursing.

Bloodborne Pathogens and Infection Control is a required Florida CNA in-service training topic under Rule 64B9-15.011, F.A.C., and is included within the 24 in-service training hours required each biennium.

Domestic Violence is a required Florida CNA in-service training topic under Rule 64B9-15.011, F.A.C., and is included within the 24 in-service training hours required each biennium.

Medical Record Documentation and Legal Aspects Appropriate to Nursing Assistants is a required Florida CNA in-service training topic under Rule 64B9-15.011, F.A.C., and is included within the 24 in-service training hours required each biennium.

Resident Rights is a required Florida CNA in-service training topic under Rule 64B9-15.011, F.A.C., and is included within the 24 in-service training hours required each biennium.

Communication With Cognitively Impaired Clients is a required Florida CNA in-service training topic under Rule 64B9-15.011, F.A.C., and is included within the 24 in-service training hours required each biennium.

CPR Skills is a required Florida CNA in-service training topic under Rule 64B9-15.011, F.A.C., and is included within the 24 in-service training hours required each biennium; this course reviews CPR-related concepts but does not replace hands-on CPR certification or in-person skills training when required.

Medical Error Prevention and Safety is a required Florida CNA in-service training topic under Rule 64B9-15.011, F.A.C., and is included within the 24 in-service training hours required each biennium.

Assistance with Self-Administration of Medication is not a standard CNA renewal requirement, but it is commonly required for HHAs, CNAs, and in-home caregivers who assist clients with medication reminders, access, and self-administration support; CNAs who administer medication to patients of a home health agency should also be aware of the requirements of s. 464.2035, F.S.

DOEA-approved Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) training is not a standard Florida Board of Nursing renewal requirement, but it is an important Florida training requirement for in-home caregivers. Caregivers who provide personal care or have regular client contact through covered providers — including home health agencies, nurse registries, and companion/homemaker service providers — may be required to complete ADRD training based on their role and work setting. This training is relevant for HHAs, CNAs, companions, homemakers, and other in-home caregivers who support older adults or clients living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.

These courses are not Florida Board of Nursing renewal requirements and are not reported to CE Broker as RN/LPN or CNA renewal CE unless specifically identified as a board-approved renewal course. They are commonly required or recommended for HHAs, companions, homemakers, and other in-home caregivers based on the caregiver’s role, provider setting, and client contact. Requirements may vary for caregivers working with home health agencies, nurse registries, and companion/homemaker service providers.
