Required Continuing Education for Illinois RNs and LPNs — 20 CE Hours
Illinois Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses must complete 20 hours of approved continuing education during each two-year license-renewal cycle. Required-topic courses count toward the 20-hour total, and the remaining hours may be completed through approved general nursing electives.
Sexual Harassment Prevention — 1 CE Hour
Required during every renewal cycle
Illinois individual professional license holders must complete at least one hour of sexual harassment prevention training during each renewal cycle, beginning with the first renewal after initial licensure.
Implicit Bias Awareness — 1 CE Hour
Required during every renewal period that requires continuing education
Illinois nurses must complete one hour of implicit bias awareness training during each renewal period for which continuing education is required.
Beginning July 1, 2026, nurses who report providing maternal healthcare services must complete implicit bias training that also addresses maternal health risks affecting marginalized racial and ethnic populations.
Cultural Competency — 1 CE Hour
Required initially and then once every six years
Illinois nurses must complete at least one hour of cultural competency training before the first renewal requiring continuing education that occurs on or after January 1, 2025. The course must then be repeated at least once every six years.
Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias — 2 CE Hours
Mandated Reporter Training — 1 CE Hour
Required at least every six years for nurses who work with children
RNs and LPNs who work with children in a professional or official capacity must complete Illinois mandated reporter training at least once every six years.
Nurses who do not work with children may instead complete the required mandated-reporter attestation during each license renewal. Completed mandated reporter training may count toward the 20-hour CE requirement.

After completing the mandatory topics that apply during the current renewal cycle, Illinois RNs and LPNs may select approved general nursing courses to reach the required 20-hour total.

First-renewal exception: Illinois RNs and LPNs are generally exempt from the 20-hour continuing-education requirement for their first Illinois license renewal. However, the separate sexual harassment prevention requirement begins with the first renewal after initial licensure.
